Analysis of Sensory Coding in the Lateral Superior Olive

چکیده
The fundamental questions of sensory neuroscience are how neurons encode information and how neurons extract (process) information. For example, in the auditory system, sound location is determined by a combination of amplitude and time cues. The Lateral Superior Olive (LSO), one of the first nuclei to receive inputs from both ears, is thought to extract high-frequency localization information based on interaural level difference (ILD) and interaural time difference (ITD) cues. However, while the optimal localization processing system produces the same response for the same ILD regardless of source level,1 LSO responses are affected by source level. This sensitivity questions the presumption that the LSO is strictly an angle processor, and suggests that the LSO may be coding other stimulus features such as sound level. We have used a new analysis technique to analyze the significance of the LSO sensitivity to sound level compared to that of an optimal angle processor. We also examined the processing of two features: azimuthal angle and source level by the LSO network by comparing the response sensitivity of network inputs with that of its outputs.

Roles for Coincidence Detection in Coding Amplitude-Modulated Sounds
Many sensory neurons encode temporal information by detecting coincident arrivals of synaptic inputs. In the mammalian auditory brainstem, binaural neurons of the medial superior olive (MSO) are known to act as coincidence detectors, whereas in the lateral superior olive (LSO) roles of coincidence detection have remained unclear. LSO neurons receive excitatory and inhibitory inputs driven by ip...
متن کاملEnhancement of ITD coding within the initial stages of the auditory pathway.
Sensory systems use a variety of strategies to increase the signal-to-noise ratio in their inputs at the receptor level. However, important cues for sound localization are not present at the individual ears but are computed after inputs from the two ears converge within the brain, and we hypothesized that additional strategies to enhance the representation of these cues might be employed in the...

Introduction: Emergency diet is the most important factor in passive defense that can be effective in war situations and crisis management in non-war situations. Due to the favorable conditions of emergency diet, it is important that it provides the required macro and micro molecules.Since most of the Emergency diet composition is composed of carbohydrates, it is very important that it can be u...
متن کاملRestricted loss of olivocochlear but not vestibular efferent neurons in the senescent gerbil (Meriones unguiculatus)
Degeneration of hearing and vertigo are symptoms of age-related auditory and vestibular disorders reflecting multifactorial changes in the peripheral and central nervous system whose interplay remains largely unknown. Originating bilaterally in the brain stem, vestibular and auditory efferent cholinergic projections exert feedback control on the peripheral sensory organs, and modulate sensory p...
متن کاملA New Approach for Olive (Arbequina cv.) Micropropagation: Effect of Dikegulac, Light and Carbon Source
Micro-propagation of olive provides the possibility of producing clones of native plants with appropriate attributes and mass reproduction in short period of time, compared to conventional methods. Apical dominance in olive explants limits the growth of lateral branches in vitro. The effect of Woody Plant Medium (WPM), Olive Medium (OM) and Murashig and Skoog (MS) with carbohydrate source (mann...
